Introduction to Fitness and Health

Physical Education is education through physical activity because it is important to human growth and behavior.

Physical Fitness means attributes that people have or achieve that relates to the ability to perform physical activity.

Health is a state of physical, mental, and social well-being in which disease and infirmity are absent.


The 7 dimensions of wellness are:

  1. physical

  2. environmental

  3. social

  4. career

  5. intellectual

  6. spiritual

  7. emotional

Physical fitness testing is categorized into two: health-related fitness and skills-related fitness.

Health-related fitness:

body composition - amount of fat-free mass to amount of body fat

flexibility - range of motion within a joint or group of joints

cardiovascular endurance - the ability of the circulatory system to deliver oxygen and the ability of muscles to use them

muscular strength - using muscles to generate force against physical objects (lifting things)

muscular endurance - the ability of muscles to not tire out easily


Skills-related fitness:

power - how much force you can exert

agility - changing directions quickly

speed - how fast you can run in one direction

reaction time - the time it takes for you to react to certain stimuli

coordination - combining multiple movements into one smooth, fluid movement

balance - prevent falls and maintain your independence
